EMERGE
EMERGE is a group of concerned citizens, headed by Joe Shipman,
dedicated to preserving and restoring the rich history of Elsberry.
EMERGE, which is an acronym for Economic Management of Elsberry
area Regeneration Growth and Excellence, saw its first attempt at
restoration become a rousing success with the Senate Theater, recently
opened. Without cooperation from the Sinnett family, who are still
quite active in the theater and from whom the building is leased,
there would be no Senate Theater. EMERGE ran a very successful fund
raising campaign, and used local contractors to perform the renovation.
Much of the work was done by Billy Collins Construction (at reduced
rates and with donated time), and B&B Construction and Development
was also deeply involved.

Shipman was also the driving force behind the creation of the Fourth
Street Fountain, renovating a former Hallmark shop into a 1940's
style soda fountain, complete with outdoor patio. Operated by Wesley
and Marcia Fakes, Fourth Street Fountain is a major element in continuing
the nostalgia of Elsberry history. Joe and Bobette Shipman bought
the building that now houses the Fourth Street Fountain along with
her law office. Kudo's to the Fakes, who were key elements in this
renovation, for their real work and renovation financing necessary
to create the rebirth of the Fountain.

These efforts by the Shipmans, Fakes and the community were recognized
with two awards from the Lincoln County Historical Society in 2005. |
